Charles Howl have been firm favourites at Freakender for the past five years and we've followed Howl's journey from garage rock n roll, through psych and shoegazed indie rock to the more distinct, ambitious and natural sound where his current sound lays. Charles Howl has found his voice and confidence in singing, delivering wry British kitchen sink vignettes with the Englishness of Albarn or Ayres.
Time spent in Amsterdam recording 2017's sophomore album, 'My Idol Family' proved the needed medicine to allow for skilful songwriting, neater arrangements and for Howls songwriting to blossom. Subtle psychedelic undertones of paranoia are matched with lush moments of joyful revelation in the waltzing tempo and analogue synths. The latest album is full of dramatic indie pop moments that's are as fictional as they are devastatingly real.
"Enthralled by soundtracks and pop music in all its forms, Howl updates classic motifs to create a signature aesthetic. Introducing strings and lush orchestration to dazzling effect, he is comfortable with both wide-open song structures and intimate headphone tracks. With this album Howl reveals his true talent as a songwriter and arranger, mixing well-crafted storytelling with a dry wit, it is also more ambitious, touching on themes of idol worship, friends and the family unit"
Currently based in Paris, Charles Howl will play a few selected shows in the UK this December and Glasgow we are the lucky ones.
